Fastest Private Jet - Cessna Citation X+

Cessna released the Citation X+ in 2012 and it is their most advanced business plane ever. It looks great too with its wing design swept back and its high swept T shape tail. Passengers in this aircraft will certainly be traveling in style and will reach their destination rapidly thanks to its top speed eclipsing all other private jets.

With a top speed of 536 knots (around 617 miles per hour) the Cessna Citation X+ can achieve an impressive Mach 0.935. This aircraft has good load carrying capacity as well with a maximum load of 36,600 pounds.

It does have a new price tag of around $23 million, but it is not the most expensive private aircraft on this top 10 fastest jets list. When you consider the speed and all of the other advanced features that come with the Citation X+ the price is very affordable.

When you purchase the fastest Citation X+ model it will come equipped with twin, dual-channel, Rolls Royce turbo engines. The engines on the Citation X+ are full authority digital engine (FADEC) controlled.

Not only do you get subsonic level speed with the Cessna Citation X+ but you also have an aircraft with high fuel efficiency. The automatic fuel system provides the correct combination of ignite and fuel mixture to ensure that you experience the best speed performance as well as range for the plane.

Gulfstream G650

If you are looking for a private jet that has a significant load capacity but can still deliver Mach speed levels than you should consider the Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation’s G650 model. The G650 can propel you through the air at 516 knots (around 594 miles per hour) and can reach Mach 0.925.

Where the G650 really scores is its load carrying capacity which has a limit of 99,600 pounds. This does come with a hefty price tag though and if you want to buy a new one you will not get much change from $53 million.

The G650 has the capacity to carry up to 19 passengers in comfort and there is room for one or two crew members as well. Cabin dimensions come in at 45 feet in length by 8 feet in width and 6 feet 4 inches in height.

Another impressive feature of the Gulfstream 650 is its range. You can fly distances of up to 5,000 nautical miles (9,200 kilometers). There are two Rolls Royce engines in the G650 similar to the Cessna Citation X+ and these provide the power necessary for a smooth ride in the air.

Design features of note on the G650 are the supercritical aerofoil wings which reduce the amount of drag and vortex. This helps the G650 to achieve maximum speeds with increased stability at higher altitudes. The twin Rolls Royce engines provide the necessary power and they are also fuel efficient.

You can fly the Gulfstream G650 securely on autopilot thanks to the flight control system which is fly-by-wire. The cabin on the G650 offers a lot of flexibility and you can change the way it is setup to a meeting format, entertainment format or relaxation format.

Cessna Citation X

This is the predecessor to the Citation X+ model made by Cessna Textron Aviation. With this model you can achieve speeds of 528 knots (607 miles per hour) with a Mach speed of 0.92. There is a maximum load capacity of 36,100 pounds with this model and you can comfortably carry 13 passengers.

Because it is the predecessor of the Citation X+ do not think that it is inferior in any way. The Citation X uses state-of-the-art components and it has the same stylish supercritical aerofoil swept back wing which works well to minimize the amount of drag at the highest speeds.

Again you will pay around $23 million for a Citation X which makes it very affordable when you consider what you are getting. There is a large cabin which you can setup in a number of different ways to accommodate passenger requirements. You will have access to WiFi onboard so that you can stay in touch during most of the flight.

Dassault Falcon 7X

A French company, Dassault Aviation, manufacturers the next fastest private jet on our list which is the Dassault Falcon 7X. This aircraft has a top speed of 515 knots (almost 593 miles per hour) and is capable of achieving Mach 0.9.

The Falcon 7X has the capacity to carry 12 passengers and one or two crew members in comfort. Load carrying capacity is also impressive with this plane with its maximum weight at take off being 70,000 pounds.

It will cost you around $54 million to get your hands on a new Dassault Falcon 7X, but you are getting a lot of aircraft for your money. Dassault has improved the aerodynamics of the Falcon 7X by using double-slotted Fowler flaps and they have also added leading-edge slats.

The wing design on the Falcon 7X allows the aircraft to fly at high speeds as well as at higher altitudes. You will also be able to make smoother and slower approaches for landing with the improved Falcon 7X.

Gulfstream G650ER

The second entry from Gulfstream on our top 10 fastest private jet list is the impressive G650ER. Top speed here is around 514 knots (about 591 miles per hour) and it can also achieve Mach 0.9 just like the Dassault Falcon 7X.

The difference between the standard Gulfstream G650 and the G650ER is that the latter is designed for greater range. Load capacity is at 10,300 pounds and the plane can comfortably accommodate 10 passengers. This aircraft has a large cabin but the limit of 10 passengers helps to improve the range of travel.

Another major difference is the price. The G650ER will cost about half of the G650 new at around $27 million. Some of the design characteristics are the same as the G650 such as the cabin management system, the wing design and the fuselage.

The biggest difference between the G650ER and the G650 is the engines. Two Rolls Royce BR75 engines (A1-12) power the G650ER. There is an auto-throttle system provided with the G650ER which helps the aircraft to fly well under a variety of conditions.

Bombardier Global 6000

If the fastest business jet is something that you are looking for then you need to take a look at the Bombardier Global 6000. This is a large cabin jet that can carry 19 passengers and up to four crew members in comfort.

What about top speed? Well you can achieve an impressive 504 knots (approximately 580 miles per hour) with a Mach 0.89 in this powerful plane. The Global 6000 is also a long range aircraft as well achieving 6,000 nautical miles. Load capacity is a maximum of 99,500 pounds.

The manufacturer of the Global 6000 is a Canadian company, Bombardier Aerospace. They wanted to create a luxury, high performance, business jet and they have certainly achieved that. It will cost you a cool $73 million new, but business jets of this high quality are always going to command a high price.

To keep the weight down to a minimum on this large plane, Bombardier Aerospace have used carbon fiber extensively. The reduced weight helps to improve the fuel economy of the aircraft and it is pretty fuel efficient for such a good performer.

Pilots of the Global 6000 will be impressed with the technology available including:

  • Full diagnostic system
  • Traffic avoidance system
  • HUD display
  • Emergency locator transmitter
  • Multi-functional touch screen

This is an impressive list of technologically advanced controls and safety systems not found on most private jets. In addition to this, you can customize the cabin to suit your requirements.

Gulfstream G550

Gulfstream G550

Another impressive aircraft from Gulfstream is their G550. With a top speed of around 499 knots (around 574 miles per hour) and the ability to achieve Mach 0.885 this is a high performance private jet.

There are other impressive features about the G550. It will carry 19 passengers in comfort and has a long range of around 6,750 nautical miles. Load capacity is kept down to 9,100 pounds to preserve both the high speeds and the longer range of this aircraft.

If you want to purchase a new Gulfstream G550 then you will have to pay around $62 million. But you do get a lot of private jet for this money. It has FADEC controlled, twin Rolls Royce BR710 C4-11 engines which provide the thrust power that it needs to achieve high speeds.

To ensure high top speeds, the G550 has lightweight and swept back wings. The wings have spoilers, winglets, ailerons and flaps that all help to increase the speed of this private jet. Placement of the wings ensures that there is ample space in the cabin for passengers and crew.

The G550 has a number of built in safety features to increase passenger confidence. HUD technology helps the pilot to fly the plane safely even in the most extreme weather conditions.

Factors to Consider When Purchasing Your Fastest Private Jet

Speed is not everything when you are purchasing a business private jet. There are a number of other things that you need to take into consideration:

  • Flight Distances
If you intend to travel far then you will need an aircraft that has a good range. Not all of the planes in our list have impressive ranges but some certainly do such as the Gulfstream G650ER and G550 models and the Bombardier Global 6000.

  • Passenger Capacity
Most of the planes in our list can carry 10 passengers and upwards. So you need to consider how many people you will want to fly around before making your final purchase decision.

  • Load Capacity
Often with the fastest private jets there is a trade-off between speed and load carrying capacity. This is not always the case though as the second fastest private plane in our list, the Gulfstream G650 has a load capacity of 99,600 pounds. So work out the amount of luggage you will want to carry before deciding which private jet is for you.

  • Price
If you are in the market for a fast private jet then price is not likely to be that much of an issue for you. Having said that, new prices for these planes ranges from $23 million new to $73 million so you will need to have a budget in mind.

  • Safety and Comfort
Another important consideration is the safety and comfort of your passengers. Check out the safety features of all of the private jets you are considering.

One of the best things about modern private jets is that they have got faster and more economical to fly over the years. The manufacturers have focused on these two things and the likelihood is that they will continue to do this. At the moment the Cessna Citation X+ is the fastest private jet but this could change at any time.

If you are not in the market for a new private jet then you can save a great deal of money in the second hand market. There are some great examples to be found in our aircraft classifieds marketplace.
